Followup to "So we met a dog..."

Just a quick update to my story http://docmurdock.posterous.com/so-we-met-a-dog from January. I took a side trip today on my way down to teach the social media class for The Orange County Business Experts.

That trip was to see "Buddy Guy". Buddy is the dog we found in January in Huntington Beach.

The news is great. Buddy is healthy, he's happy, and he's well cared for. It was such a thrill to see him, when I arrived to visit, his new owner went to let him out, Buddy ran to me and leaped into my arms. WOW what strength he has now that he's being taken care of.

He was able to be off leash and obeyed commands from his owner. I was simply touched by this.

So once in a while there are pleasing continuations of great stories. This is one of them. I know from time to time we'll see Buddy Guy, and he'll do just fine out there.

Thanks again to the Universe for the amazing lesson in unconditional love. I am so happy and grateful that this came our way. We needed a refresher and it could not have come at a better time.

God bless Buddy Guy, his new owner and people everywhere who have dogs come into their lives. When it does happen, talk to your heart and see how you feel.

Once in a while...

there comes a business and people you really want to brag about because they’re fun, they produce a great product and they bring smiles to many faces. This time that business is Mike Madden & his Cookies in Bloom shop in Phoenix, AZ.

Mike’s a great guy always smiling, always making me laugh, and always connecting with others and supporting them on facebook. He’s constantly liking pages, and pictures and keeping me on my toes on facebook which is tough for anyone.

While we were on our trip to Arizona this past week we had a chance finally to stop in and see Mike and his store. What a treat that was. Literally!! They've got a great location in Phoenix on the corner of 40th and Indian School right next to a large new trampoline park.

When we entered, we met Mike (finally), this is me in the photo with him and photos of the great products that they produce in the gallery.

Mike was kind enough to send us on our way with some goodies. The cookies did not make the trip to Tucson. One bite told me and Maria that these were well made tasty cookies that needed to be eaten. The thing that made it back with us was the Hannah Caramel Apples, the last of which was finished this very day.

I want to say THANKS to Mike Madden for sharing with us his time, his products, and the story of how they do what they do. You're a credit to your business and a pleasure to know.

I wish you much success in your business and all that you do.

So we met a dog...

On January 11th we thought we'd have a normal day. This was the day after launching The Orange County Business Experts. I was not 100% feeling well, but offered to take some equipment back to Irvine to return it, and on the way Maria needed to go to a quick meeting with our partners from Phoenix. So we went to meet them at their hotel in Huntington Beach. As we pulled into the parking lot we noticed this cute little dog bouncing around the parking lot looking for food. Nobody was watching him, he had no leash, no collar and it looked like not much hope.

As we got out of the car he saw us and came running our direction. This was the start of an amazing day. He appeared to be abandoned and we were shocked. This dog had a well groomed coat, perfect nails, perfect teeth and the disposition of a house broken puppy with a yearning to be loved. The universe had delivered to us a gift that we were to share with another.

Maria had her meeting with the team and while we were inside the hotel, the dog joined us and wandered around. The Manager at this particular hotel was not accommodating in the least. "Remove that dog" he said to us. Personally I was a bit miffed at the person who looked like he was just an unhappy person stuck behind a desk, so I took the dog to a local petsmart store had him checked over at the Banfield Desk there to see if there was a microchip present so we could track the owner. No chip. No license. We also noticed that he had not been fed in a while. They gave me a leash to put him on, see the picture:

So whoever had this dog, took good care of him, but yet starved him and they did not want him to be tied to them in any way...interesting.

We got on the road, headed to Irvine to return our equipment and where we did that we found who would 24 hours later become the owner of this wonderful fur-being. This guy was thrilled to meet this dog that had wandered into our lives and Maria was quick to say "HEY YOU WANT A DOG?" He said YES!!! I was a bit protective of our new friend as I knew there were things that had to be done to see if the current owner would surface, plus there was something else flowing into me that said this dog was here to teach us something and we needed some time with it.

I told the guy we had to check on the current owners and would get back with him. So we came home went to work on Craigslist, posting an ad there with pictures. I had posted one at Petsmart with our contact info on it, and then we took the dog to another spot to see if there was anyone looking for him or if there was a possibility to put him up for adoption. We contacted a local animal rescue NO-KILL Shelter, but they were full and could only refer us elsewhere.

We brought the puppy home and I named him "Buddy". Hey Buddy! I said and he leaped up and licked my face. Maybe his name was Buddy after all! I fed him, watered him, and even gave him a quick shampoo to make sure he was nice and clean for the activities of the following day.

Our dog Sophie is a bit territorial so when she looked out the window and saw her Daddy fawning over this puppy she began growling and barking and well needless to say it was a bit interesting when I went to sleep, Sophie curled up next to me and all of a sudden out of no where the bed starts moving around underneath. Puppy had wandered up stairs into the bedroom and was under the bed playing with Sophie's toys. The growling ensued and well finally all went to sleep after much laughter and a few OH BOY that was somethings!

The following day, I woke, checked all the places we'd posted Ads...Nothing. So we contacted our guy in Irvine and arranged to take the dog down to him. On the way I connected with Buddy and explained to him that we were taking him to his new owner and that he should be well looked after. He looked at me with these big eyes and then stood up and licked my face. A bit disconcerting to have that happen at 65mph on the freeway, but unconditional love is just that. It happens when it chooses to.

Upon arrival, I got Buddy out of the car, he saw the new owner and instantly ran to be with him licking his hands and face and saying a big hello. I told the guy that I had named the dog Buddy and he said "That's so funny, that's the name I wanted to give him". So the name has stuck, in fact, he's been named "Buddy Guy" after a Blues Guitarist of the same name. What a great name and it does fit! He's a BUDDY and he's a GUY doggie!!!

So what was the universe reminding us of you ask? Unconditional love. To show up as equals in this timespace and to treat all as same is truly important in understanding how to best serve the greater good in this time. When we do this we level the space in which we hold for others to show up and connect with us. There is no speaking down to or up from, there is equality and love unconditional. From this can come nothing but love, peace, joy, understanding and clarity of purpose in being here and now.

Thank you Universe for this lesson, and thank you Buddy for your spirit and love in the time you spent with us. We appreciate you and are so grateful that you came and connected with us. Whoever let you go...we bless them and wish them well on their way and we thank them for letting you be free to choose who you desired to be with and mentor going forward.

SNAPDRAGON Stadium, Formerly Qualcomm Stadium...Shocker!

And here's how I want to do it...

I've been in the internet marketing/affiliate marketing business for what seems like forever. I've seen people come and seen people go and it's always amazing to me that the ones that stick around are the ones that are really making the money and having fun doing it.

So, for the rest of those out there who think they have the chops for a challenge, I will offer you a $250K bonus to the first one of you that works with me and helps me to BANK $1 Million dollars by the 30th of November 2012.

That's right. With all those wonderful programs out there with all those guarantees, I challenge you to use me as your test case of "I can help anyone make a million dollars on the web using my methods and I guarantee it."

Here's the rules to this:

a. I will be instructed by you in your methods, all under non-disclosure/non-compete, and I will follow your directions of success because you're already a liquid millionaire and you know what the best method of achieving success is.

b. It cannot cost me one dime to do and it cannot involve any list of people that I currently work with. This has to be all fresh based on techniques that you'll teach me for building a list interested in your product. I am not paying for your product. You are investing in yourself, and in me and I am offering my 30 years of tech background to be tested to prove your product and methods work. In turn I am going to tell the entire world your product is amazing and they need to buy it (if it in fact is amazing and does work).

c. The database that gets built from it is mine and you have no access to it, until we JOINT VENTURE which once you've helped me do this and I am bragging about you, we'll be joint venturing a lot.

d. In exchange, you get $250K in CASH from me out of the $1 Million you're helping me to bank. If we do this in 6 months, you can bump that up bonus to $500K. I am putting this out for a simple reason. I have seen a ton of these programs out there. And nobody seems to stand behind them with any real chutzpah. So I want to have someone out there in the business that I can laud what they do to everyone. I'll be posting ads in papers for them when this is done, speaking about them at events, bragging all over facebook, twitter, to the news media, etc. I'll be a one person wall street billboard for their product if they can truly deliver what I have posted above, and I will get a newscrew to come out and film the presentation of the cash or check to them live, and get it onto CNN and some other places as well.

Why? Because I see people getting ripped off by a lot of hacks out there and there truly has to be one person out there who has a product, a system that I've not seen, that works and could use a name or brand behind them to double, triple, quadruple their business and I am willing to do that.

RIP Steve. You, my friend will be truly missed

Today is a day I will never forget. It's a day when someone who influenced me for years, mentored me, coached me, and inspired me moved on.

The sphere feels emptier this day as news of the passing of Steve Jobs fills the air. The TV is lit up with it, it's on the web and on Apple's website the following image

really says it all:

I first met Steve Jobs on University Avenue in Palo Alto one morning back in 1987 as he was walking to a local muffin shop. Later I found that many who had been at Apple with him were going there and eventually I talked with him briefly in passing and said "One day I'd like to work for you".

Move to March 16th, 1991 when I began my workday at PIXAR in Pt Richmond, CA. Steve and Laurene were married on my birthday, the 18th of March. So I did not see him that week, but when he did return we reconnected and he remembered the Palo Alto meeting. His words were simple: "You've gotten your wish. Welcome to your new home".

Later in my time there would be things like a phone call "Mike can you come here and help me, it's Steve".

I had the honor of working with this man for 6 years at PIXAR. The times I shared in talking with him and learning from him I will cherish as jewels in an amazing basket of abundance. The wisdom he shared with me which is private to this day was shear brilliance and I thank him for it.

Rest in Peace Steve. Thanks for all you shared during your time in the sphere, and you will truly be missed. Our prayers are with the family this evening and the spirit of the man as he makes the journey home and receives the reward.

Why would you want to be CEO of Yahoo?

You know it's funny. I dial the way back machine when asked that one and run back to a point in time back in 1997 when someone said "Hey you'd make a great CEO of Apple" and I laugh. Because back then it was about getting someone else in to run the company back up to where it couldn't be stopped and that happened. The best person for the job got in formed a great team and took the company straight up and did not look back, except to fondly remember where it came from. It did so after getting to be the most valuable company on the planet. It took a while. He was the best person and NO ONE, not even me could have done that better. Am humbled by my time working with Steve Jobs. It's taught me much and prepared me for this in many ways.

I also then fast forward to 2008/2009 when we were sitting in Scottsdale and Jerry Yang was removed as CEO of Yahoo and relegated to a seat on the Board of Directors (WARNING) and also given or allowed to retain the title of "Chief Yahoo". That's a term that if I had my way about it would be removed from the company completely. It's not appropriate. Sure Yahoo has some culture and needs to be a bit renegade, but when you're fired from your position, you're NOT put on the Board and you're definitely NOT Chief Yahoo. In fact, you're not welcome on the property. HINT HINT.

Then we move forward to a little while later when the "Board" hires Carol Bartz, who turned around Autodesk. Maker of...a few software products.
Yahoo is Santa's workshop compared to that, and you need a technology/internet background for this. She did not have one. I have one that spans 30 years. She has NO background in entertainment, no background in technology directly herself, she's not a programmer, she's not worked in computers, she has no idea what techies really need to do, to feel, to thrive with, and she's put in charge of this behemoth of a company which should have been downsized and reorg'd years before, and she's off to the races slicing and dicing without really thinking about things, she makes a deal to get search off to Microsoft...at that point, you close the company. YAHOO WAS SEARCH. You close the company and you reopen as something newer and more exciting that drives investor interest through the roof and it's called...(we'll wait for the Board to put my name on the door before we share that).

Now we skip forward to this week. Ms Bartz is fired by email or text message or phone or all of the above, and someone doing this forgets to disable her email account before doing this. Way to go BOARD! She runs off and is interviewed by everyone and their brother who wants first dibs on the juicy lines and gets one 'Yahoo F--ked ME OVER" or works to that effect. They did? What did you do to the company? What did you do with Alibaba? Why did you not increase company profits or drive revenues or increase user population as you said you would for that amazing salary they were giving you? HOLY SMOKES! She made $42 million in perks including items related to compensating her post employment medical coverage??? Put her on the current plan and pay for that. If she costs that much to run, get a new MODEL.
GOD BLESS THE MONEY!!! and her for being able to get it. Am never going to fault the rich for getting rich. It's bad karma. I will however state that in order for that karma to continue to be good, being of SERVICE and serving the greater good is imperative. That's where she did wrong. That's part of why she's out and that's why the wheels are spinning in Sunnyvale once again.

The wheels are spinning again "Who can we hire now?", "Who will replace her?", "Who can we get that will screw things up more so we can devalue this company even more?".

The current board will do very well to accept my offer to become CEO of Yahoo for (yes you'll read this right), $200,000 a year (plus standard benefits), with an immediate $100,000.00 signing incentive, and we'll hold off on any bonus discussions until after the company is profitable. Right now, you can take away the $10 million in bonuses for Ms Bartz based on her disparaging remarks about the company and throw that into a CD with my name on it. Conditional release of it to me once the company is profitable for 4 quarters or to be left and taken as part of severance after creating a stable company and finding a replacement.
My contract 2 years. My severance if not profitable - $200,000.00. If profitable and a suitable replacement is found to take the helm, The CD + interest, plus 5 million shares of stock (fully vested) at the price at the time of my transition. If no one is found, then I'll stay on and we can discuss things at that time.

Conditions of my coming in: the above mentioned salary and benefits, plus the following:

A. I will be named both CEO & Chairman of Yahoo, Inc.
B. Jerry Yang and David Filo will tender immediate resignations. They're welcome to stay on board for 24 hours for a debrief which will be recorded.
C. All Members of the Current Board will tender their seats, to be filled within 30 days by new directors appointed by myself and a majority of share holding investors
D. Shareholders meeting scheduled within 45 days to confirm all board members, directors, CEO, CFO and other executives.
E. All current investment deals put on hold for 30 days to evaluate, meet involved parties, and discuss benefits to Yahoo, Inc.
F...let's leave this here for now. More to come once the Board puts my name on the Door. (HINT HINT).

Now THAT's Transparency!
All the other so called "Candidates" want to get back at Rupert, want to flub their dub waiting to see how low they can drive the stock price. I have a vision for Yahoo and those that know me will understand when I say that "I've already seen and experienced what Yahoo will be". I can tell you it's destined to be a very large part of what's happening in technology now and for some time to come with me running it. With anyone else, it will become dust shortly.

You want my background - Got into computers in 1975/76, have loved technology all my life. Worked in computer stores as a sales person, worked in tech support, worked as a consultant, have overseen multi-million dollar computer server installations, have written programs, have modified existing programs, have tested software, broken software, found faults in Operating Systems and help resolve major computer crash problems at financial institutions. I have been in the trenches busting my ass for the good of those companies out there in tech land. I've also had the amazing opportunity of a lifetime to be on the Team at PIXAR that made TOY STORY. I've had the immense honor of working with and spending time with Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and many other technology luminaries. I've learned some amazing things in business over the past 8 years because of my now wonderful wife, and it just gets better from there.

The plan - That's between ME, MY TEAM, and the NEW BOARD when they're appointed. For now let's just say it does not involve divesting into multiple companies. It does involve changes. It involves tightening, and it involves slicing the current line of products and services substantially. More later. Oh and so you know there is MUCH MORE and it's ALL good.

The timeframe - 2 years TOPS. More like 12 months once everyone is in place. For those employees worried about flow of information, no problem there. We'll start a countdown to profitable clock screen, we'll put it on every desktop and we'll make sure we're profitable long before it reaches zero. When we are, we'll share something amazing with you. Along the way we'll share progress with you. We'll take input from you. We'll institute an equal exchange of energy program. More on that when the Board puts my name on the door.

Turning things around in Sunnyvale are MORE THAN POSSIBLE. As I see them, they've already happened. All it takes to bring it to this reality is: a phone call from the board, a check from Yahoo as mentioned above for signing on (you can send that along via courier to The UPS Store at 5points plaza in 92648, they know how to reach me. And I'll be in Sunnyvale on Tuesday and we can get started. I take Monday's off. Get used to it.

See, when it comes to things like this, I've been thinking about them for years. Passionate? YES. Driven? YES. Excited? YES. Ready? Oh YOU BETCHA!

In closing this rather long note, none of this is a joke. Those who know me will say "That's OUR Michael". Others will say "I can't f-ing believe he's doing it again". Still others will say "That takes Balls!"

You're all right. But I am here, I am ready, and Yahoo...you truly can use an infusion of excitement. I promise you it will be nothing short of that and EVERYONE in the company will benefit in the long run. Investors...sorry for your losses, but the board had this chance in 2008/9. Now it's time to make things right.

Someone notable in tech lore once gave me a great piece of advice: "Mike, never turn down the opportunity to do live tv". Thanks Bob! This time...I'm more than ready.

Steve Jobs…and the rest of the story

Folks, come on.
Let's get real. TMZ...Seriously??? Harvey you might be lawyer (and a pretty sucky one at that) , but...damn! EVEN SHARKS HAVE SOME SKIN! Now how about getting a fricking clue, if Apple decides to sue you because of your lowlife pictures of Steve who is now their chairman, something tells me they have deeper pockets than even you.
Let's be real, let's be human and most of all let's give Steve his time to be out of the limelight and give the Man and his family a break. They deserve one.

Now, for those who called and wanted me to dive into something over his resignation...not happening. The water under that bridge is long gone. Get over it. There are NO hard feelings between myself and Steve Jobs. I have nothing but the highest respect for him and the work he and the team at Apple (yes there is a team there) have accomplished since he went back.

There was a time when we did not see eye to eye in certain things, but I have expressed my words to my mentor and have mended fences where they could have been mended and moved on. We all grow up. I've been given support along the way and I cherish what Apple has done for me which is nobody's business.

Those who wish to short the stock and drive the price down, get a life. Investment community...if you were so fricking bright, why is our economy so messed up? if you're the ones whose advice we should live by, why are you coming back to us to bail your butts out after you pissed away all of our money in the first place? I say let the banks fail, let the investment companies fail and let's shift things back a bit and go off of reality and not the imagination of a bunch of spoiled stock brokers who bitch because they don't get their bonus. YOU OWE US. Not the other way around.

To BofA and Countrywide...FAIL. To other banks...bye bye. There it's out, someone said it. Now deal with it. I am by no means a math genius. My wife will be the first to tell you, but I will share with you that I would never stoop as low as some of you people have to publish some of the pictures and remarks about the man and team who've taken Apple to be the 2nd and the 1st highest valued company ON THE PLANET! Not just in the USA. They've obviously done something right.

Apple had a plan, contrary to everyone's belief (with the exception of those of us who knew they had a plan and were laughing at the rest of you bastards over that one).

Apple put its plan in place and has executed on it. Now, it's time to get behind the new CEO, the new BOARD, and allow them the room they need to work on continuing to make the best products possible and to help make our lives even better as we move forward from this pivotal moment.

Personally I was sad, but also happy for Steve to take some time for him, Laurene, and their family to enjoy time together. More time than he's been able to have being CEO and always under the magnifying glass of that position. I sincerely admire him for all he's done and frankly have the confidence to say that there is NOBODY who could have done what he did with Apple. NOBODY. And no matter what anyone says about that, I could care less.

Steve brought together a solid team with a collective vision to create great products that work. Great products that serve us all better than those which preceded them. They've done and continue to do an amazing job. I applaud them all for the work they've done and will continue to do under Tim Cook's leadership as CEO. I fully support him and if there's anything I can ever do to support Tim, Steve, and the rest of Apple, they all know where I am and how to reach me. I am at their service. There is NO other public company on the planet save PIXAR that gets that from me. (the US Navy does not count as they are part of our Nation and if they called, they'd get the same attention).

Steve, thanks for being a mentor, being a friend, and being someone who's changed the face of technology for everyone. We're all better for the experience.

Charter Communications Can't SUCK ENOUGH!

If I was the CEO of Charter (and I probably should be for a month to clean house), I'd be highly embarrassed.

First off I'd be angry that my technician who was supposed to go out to a house in Templeton California to pick up some equipment failed to on the day that the appointment was for. In this case July 29th, 2011 between the hours of 8am and 1pm PST.

I'd be even angrier that the people who told the nice gent (Michael Murdock) who called in on behalf of his father to arrange for boxes to be shipped to his address in Huntington Beach, CA a mere 4.5 hours south of the current location were not shipped out as our people had promised on the 29th.

I'd be even angrier that every time Mr. Murdock has called in to arrange for boxes to be shipped so that his father's cablebox, internet modem can be returned, that he's never been properly taken care of by a supervisor and had this issue resolved back on the 29th of July!

I'd be EVEN ANGRIER that someone in my organization sent his Father a note threatening legal action against him for not returning equipment that we failed multiple times to pick up, or retrieve via boxes that we promised to ship via FEDEX.

And I'd probably POP MY CORK at the Manager who denied his/her tech permission to ship out boxes to get our equipment OVERNIGHT OR SATURDAY DELIVERY when the folks watching our twitter stream saw Mr. Murdock's angry tweets and tried to calm him down.

I'd be highly embarrassed that a Decorated War Veteran has to even think about my organization taking any action against him over something that was our fault.

I'd also EXPLODE at the thought that someone on my staff called his phone number which we provided and we disconnected and tried to leave him a message there but then wrote in the call logs that the number in Templeton California was disconnected. But I'd be even sadder to know that his son had called, and left a new number to call and leave voicemail and that number was working but our people did not take the time to read the call logs.

If I were CEO of Charter Communications, I'd be highly embarrassed.

However, I am not. I am the Veteran whose Father now living in Assisted Living with a wife who has Alzheimer's really has enough on his plate and should not have to worry about the level of incompetence and the utter f-cking MICKEY MOUSE level management of Charter Communications. But he does.

He has to worry about them, because it's taking almost a MONTH to get a set of boxes shipped to him to have the equipment that CHARTER failed to pickup, and WE KNOW FEDEX SHIPS A LOT FASTER THAN THIS.

SOMEONE at Charter has to have some kind of Balls to let this go this long. What will be entertaining is when this all comes to light and yes it has been documented quite well.

Charter, you screwed up. Now, you need to fix this and MAN UP BIG TIME. Perhaps a Donation to The Alzheimer's Foundation in the name of Walter Murdock might work to help things along...this is after you figure out how to get some boxes over here to Huntington Beach, CA so we can ship this equipment back to you.

If you're a service provider and you provide quality service, DocMurdock will write nice things about you. If you're a service provider and you try to strong arm the elderly, I will bring the thunder your way and make sure that the entire Globe knows you could not find your backside in the dark with a spotlight and a team of hands. In other words Charter...You're not worth the money people are paying. You need a serious overhaul and hopefully this will make enough of a stink to have your BOARD second guess some management at various levels.

One can only hope. For now, your fax machine and the Internet will know that you are NOT DOCMURDOCK APPROVED. (and in some cases that stamp carries a little bit of weight).

Create Great iPhone Photos - Review

Full Disclosure - I was provided a copy of the book to read and use in the review process. To be in integrity with all, I use these tools to provide a solid review of a product, service or book with no additional agenda. It's important to do this so that there's no favoritism. I will also say upfront that I love the lay flat binding in this book so I can open it, lay it down and let is stay where I opened it to. Very handy when using a book like this as a guide.

And now to the review -

First off let me say that by the time I am finished typing this there will be a slew of new apps out on the App Store for those would be iPhoneO-Graphers out there to take advantage of. That's how fast this landscape changes.

BUT!!! It's awesome that someone has taken a moment to put out a book that not only spotlights some really great apps, but also gives you some tips on how to use those apps to achieve some amazing results.

Allan did a great thing in writing this book. He used a collection of apps to tell the story and to weave together the pieces of the puzzle that not only tell the reader how to achieve things, it shows them.

At 203 pages it's an easy read which will keep you coming back for more. I found myself purchasing a few apps from the App Store, then going to the book and saying "how did he do that...oh it's right here!" I did that a lot as I was reading this mostly in the evening time before going to sleep.

Chapter 1 - takes you through the iPhone Camera Essentials. You get to understand what the iphone camera is and what isn't. You find the strength and weaknesses and learn how it compares to others out there.

Based on my personal experiences I would recommend using the iPhone 4 for any current work that you're doing with photos. Its display is amazing and the resolution of the current camera is at 5Megapixels which will generate a nice photograph either to be viewed on computer screen or in print.

Chapter 2 - discusses some great apps you'll want to get your hands on right now to extend the abilities of the camera in the iPhone. Also covers things to consider when buying different apps. I like this because as the market grows it's nice to have some baseline of things to look for when purchasing apps and what they'll do for you.

Chapter 3 - focuses (pardon the pun) on some great apps for manipulating images, cleaning them up, resizing them, basically you'll find out that you truly can have Photoshop in Your Pocket for much less than the cost of that desktop application.

Chapter 4 - covers a favorite topic of mine which is filters, effects and recipes. Here you can learn how to really cook up and deliver some great photos from your iPhones camera.

This image was created using an app called "dash of color" which lets you turn an image into grey and then introduce a little bit of color where you desire to draw the viewer's attention to important things.

Chapter 5 - looks at the "Retro Look" which is interesting. In digital photography there's a degree of sterility in images which people are dying to see overcome. They're too clean! So the retro look takes a look at ways of dirtying up the image and making it appear as if it was taken by an older model film camera. We do miss those polaroids where the light bled into the back of the camera and created an interesting image for us. Now we can easily achieve that using some apps and some settings within them. You'll see how.

This image was treated to a "haze" effect by Photofx which is an app chock full of filters and effects for everything you can imagine. Check it out and then add it to your arsenal of tools used in everyday photo editing. Seriously DocMurdock Recommended.

Chapter 6 - covers fun effects which go to places like when you were a kid and your folks gave you a little toy camera that put out some really cool pictures when the film was processed. Now you don't have to run down to FotoMat to get those pictures. Your iPhone will deliver them for you in seconds.

This image used an app called Swankolab. Swankolab is really cool because it let's you be your own Dr. Jekyll or Mr./Mrs. Hyde with chemicals. This one came out a little bit overdone for my liking, but it's just here to show you can do some cool effects with images quickly. All of these photos included were done with the iPhone 4 and its front-facing camera which is great when you remember to look up into the lens of it, not into the screen of the phone.

Chapter 7 - is that thing we often see on facebook, twitter, tumblr, and a host of other services out there, someone just took a pic and posted it and it's there for the entire globe to see if they desire. Now you'll see how that's done and some key services to use when posting images. The one I am writing this review on is called Posterous.com and it's one of my favorites. Make sure you visit it and see how to tie things together with email and posting of images. They also have an app which is free that you can load onto your iPhone or iPad 2 and take pictures, then post them along with a blog entry. Very slick stuff.

Chapter 8 - talks about the Photoblogging process and mentality as well. Allan spotlights Tumblr and Wordpress as two great ways to post your pictures. There are more than 1,000 others out there. Check out flickr as well as blogger.com and of course facebook, twitter, twitpic, dailybooth and many other services that allow you to post pictures for free. Now when you do post something remember it's out there, so if you see it on the news or something and you did not give permission for it, don't be peeved. You actually did when you posted it on the web. But that's another story entirely.

This image was treated to LoMob and its feature set. Changed from color to black and white with some great contrast as well as some doctoring on focus to allow me to appear closer than I was. Very cool use of depth of field in this and this was all done in post processing after the picture was pulled from the photo library. Some apps also allow you to do this as you've taken the picture which is handy rather than importing and changing them later on.

Chapter 9 - is a collection of users whose work is great to inspire you to do greater, cooler things with your iphone and its camera. So read through these, see what apps they use and try some out for yourself. Most of all just have fun.

This book gets a DOCMURDOCK - APPROVED stamp because it rocks! Great content, great examples, lots of pictures and tricks and it's well written by its author and published by a great group of people.

Make sure you pick up a copy or get one onto your iPad2 or iPhone from your favorite vendor.

My New iPad 2...

When the iPad first was released there was a book out that I reviewed called "My New Ipad". Now that the iPad 2 is out, Wallace has updated things and come forward with "My New iPad 2".
No Starch Press brings this publication to market with excellent delivery and this time the book is filled with color images which for me work well being that the iPad 2 has a camera and allows you to capture your world, as well as interview people as well as do facetime chatting with others.
I find a lot of how-to guides boring because they publishers go cheap and make them in black and white, but it's apparent that NoStarch took the high road with this and invested in color. Wallace takes you through the basics of using the iPad 2 as well as optimizing the usage of the batteries in this new piece of technology.
What I enjoy about Wallace is he's not talking over your head. He doesn't assume that you know every piece of the technology and what the nomenclature or parts are, he takes it at a level where you feel comfortable reading the book, don't get lost and in the end you'll know what the iPad 2 is and how to best use it for work, for play, or for simply relaxing and watching a movie on it.
In Chapter 1 he covers the basics of turning things on, putting the iPad 2 to sleep, waking it, as well as using Airplane mode which not only works on those iPad 2's which have 3g, but that control is also present in the Wifi versions, so make sure you look that section over, especially if you're going to be flying with your iPad 2.
Chapter 2, Wallace covers optimizing battery power. When to charge you iPad 2 and when to let it run down and refresh the batteries. How to monitor battery life, and how to use bluetooth ear pieces and other devices with the iPad 2 to get the most out of it. Did you know you can use a bluetooth keyboard as well as a bluetooth headset with this device? It's true!
In Chapter 3 he talks about the physical and virtual controls of the iPad 2. How to use the multitasking features in iOS and how to configure that screen lock or mute switch. You can adjust this in the settings >> General area under "Use side switch to..." .

Chapter 4 discusses controlling the multi touch screen functions such as scroll, quick scroll, Zoom. It's been said that when iOS 5 comes out that there will be some additional 'gestures' available for the iPad 2 which could easily be updated and implemented as the screen offers a larger space than simply a mouse or trackpad. Can't wait for those to come in.
In Chapter 5 you learn there's more you can do with keyboards so this is something you'll want to check into, whether you use the virtual keyboard on the screen, or one that's physically attached to the ipad via the dock connector.
Chapter 6 will show you things about customizing the home screen and Chapter 7 is Parental Controls.
Chapter 8 gets into PRIVACY which seems to be a favorite of a lot of readers out there. The iPad 2 offers some of the same protections as the iPhone does with regards to Privacy and keeping your information out of the hands of others.

Chapter 9 will share with you how to get your internet connection set up, of if you're using an iPad 2 that has 3g built in, you'll learn how to set that up as well as some additional ideas for connecting to the internet.
Chapter 10 discusses Installing and Uninstalling Apps. Finding them, adding them, moving them around, all sorts of things around apps and their usage.
Chapter 11 will get you into the use of Safari, opening multiple webpages, as well as other ways of browsing information on the web. Who thought that reading could be so much fun! We all say that we don't read now, but in reality we read more and more as we're glancing at more and more web pages each and every day. Either on our computer, iPad, other tablet device, or smartphone.
Chapter 12 Talks bookmarks in Safari as well as creating folders for bookmarks and other data management related to Safari.
Chapter 13 gets you to setting up email either automatically or manually and Chapter 14 gets into the usage of Mail and how to properly operate this app so that you are checking, reading, sending, emails as soon as possible.
Chapter 15 gets into Videos, Music, Photos and Ebooks. Using the iPad 2 as a reading device you will find eventually you want music, videos, photos, and books on it to keep you in tune with what's going on out there. I find myself reading things, removing them, taking pictures, saving them on the computer, deleting them, taking more...so this chapter covers that for you.
And there are another 15 chapters after this, but you get the idea :) This is more about you taking this book and browsing the parts you desire to read in it, or reference in it. It's an excellent guide to the iPad 2 and one that I come back to time and time again to get clarity on things in.

If you have an iPad 2 or you're thinking about getting one (as I was when I got the book to review), I would pick up a copy of this book to have around as a resource to make your iPad 2 experience an informed and positive one. It's well worth your investment. You can find the book at many online retailers.

CoPilot Live Standard & Premium

**Full Disclosure. I was provided a copy of CoPilot Live Standard & Premium for the iPhone to use in my review of the product.**
It's always fun to take a trip and to see how things turn out when you use varying services. For me I use a couple of different items just for the sake of seeing which one delivers the best result, offers the most distraction-less experience and delivers me to the destination the most times successfully.
Driving apps are becoming more and more of a requirement in the era of smart-phones. Each of them playing to a different niche, each of them offering features that the others don't and some simply refining or innovating the features of others. One that stands out in this crowd for me is CoPilot from ALK.com. I have tried a couple of different apps out there and things that are important to me are:
A. Speed of the app
B. Responsiveness to the environment (does it update according to traffic information and advise alternate routing)
C. Informational services - Gas pricing, weather, points of interest along the way
D. Support
E. Pricing
F. Maps...are they downloaded as needed or device resident
G. Informational display - how does the app show me what I need as a driver in such a way that I don't have to dig for it.
So when I received an email asking if I'd like to review the newest version of CoPilot Live for the iPhone, I jumped at the chance. I reviewed their original version so this was a treat I was looking forward to. Both of these versions are priced differently. I recommend the PREMIUM just for the amount of information and feedback the app provides. If you start out with Standard you can easily upgrade to it.
I must say out of the gate that I was completely impressed with the revisions to the app. They've taken what one would call a dashboard paradigm and moved it to a whole new level of clarity and precision. Bravo to the UI designers at ALK.com on this one. Nice job folks.
Lets get into the review now...
The app feels faster to me. In the launch phase as well as operationally, it just feels faster. I used the iPhone 4 the last time I reviewed this so it's not a difference in the hardware, but the speed increase is definitely a welcome perception if that's what it is. Something tells me they trimmed the overhead of this app in the area of memory usage as it just zips along.
Next you'll see two images.
The one where you can additional information at the top of the screen is the new version, the other is the older version which basically blocked out the phone info

The new interface is cleaner, easier to read and manages the screen better for the user. Text is bigger so that you don't have to strain your eyes to see things that's important using an app such as this one. I also like the colors they've used. Additionally what I love about this is the ability to get to other forms of display by simply tapping in the center of the "dashboard". So on the image where it says 5.1 mi and has a road with an arrow pointing right, if I were to tap that, the map would change to a view which had larger text and information about when my next turn would be. I love this information as I can choose to either use my glasses or not when looking at it, yes it's that large.
And whether or not you're using portrait view or landscape, you'll get the most information possible in the view to let you know where you're heading and how long it will take to get there:



I would like to see some different voices for navigation though. Seriously the one woman's voice that's part of the program after a while
begins to gnaw at my spine.
Want to know the weather in your area? Simply tap the weather and you can also get it for along the way, or at your destination:

Looking for the best pricing on Gas? Tap for that too! and once again, along the way or at your destination

And once you find a station you like, route to it and get your fuel.
If you park your car...you can tell it where you are by tapping, and then tell the app to find your car when done. This is handy to avoid those Seinfeld episodes where you lose your car

and you can also use facebook places and Wikipedia for additional info by simply tapping from within this screen:

These are some nice additions to an already involved program. Since the app downloads all maps to your device if you go off grid you're still able to route because information is resident on the device. The download of the app is right around 1.
One thing I really love about the app is that it shows you precisely where to be when freeways merge so that you get into the proper lane. I have found others that did not do this well. ALK did a great job and here's a sample of that in both portrait and landscape



It was telling me in the first image that I needed to be in the far right lane to get off onto the 133 North. In the next image I could be in any of the 3 right lanes and still be ok to get onto the 101 North in Ventura.
Having guidance like this is important when driving so that you can be more aware of things and not do that swing from the far left lane into the right lane across 4 lanes because you almost missed the turn off. Knowing enough in advance is one of the things that helps keep the accident rate down vs. up. So thanks to ALK for putting that into this update. Love the way you've implemented it.
Operationally, this app gave me no problems whatsoever and was dead on with every route I took during my 3 day trip, so thanks for that. One other thing I like that I've not seen in other apps is the ability to tell ALK when you find something that they need to update. Right in the app you can do this and they fix things all the time and you'll then get a notice to update and they push the changes down to your app quickly. Very slick.
In summation, this update to CoPilot is definitely DocMurdock Approved & Recommended for all to purchase. Go to the App Store and get this app if you don't have it. It's also available on Android.

EcoStylus from Shapedad

So I was tweeting one day asking Wacom to send me a Bamboo review unit when I received a tweet from someone who said basically try out my stylus that I am selling, it's made out of Bamboo, REAL BAMBOO! Here's the guy below.

So we exchanged tweets and then emails and I said send me one and let's see if we can put the stamp of approval on it. I read about it on http://www.etsy.com/shop/shapedad and saw some things about it on the web. Here's a guy who figured out how to make a capacitive stylus for the ipad and iphone which is made out of real bamboo, copper and nylon. It's not large, it's not cumbersome, it's not unwieldily, it's thin, light, easy to use, and fun to work with. It makes using the iPad fun and more accurate than using your fingertips in some cases. This I like.
So in order to find all these things out, I had to receive one. It came in a nice bubble wrapped envelope which when opened yielded the following:

So amidst all that was happening I decided to get to work with this stylus. Just to give you an idea of the length of it, I laid it out on the ipad screen. There you can get an idea of how long this is. Which is great because some of these things are just too short and trying to write on the iPad screen with something that is short would just not work well.

So I launched facebook as the app and decided to just see how it would be to tap out a message with this thing. How would it feel different than simply tapping with my finger. Now granted I can type quickly, even on the smaller keyboard which the ipad facebook app uses (because facebook is too lazy to create an actual ipad app due to Zuckerberg thinking that the ipad is not really portable???), but I thought it would be fun to tap out a message just for grins:

So I tapped that out and eventually shared it with the rest of the world. Tapping can be fun just to see how your coordination works. This is something that will become apparent as you go forward in life, so this skill is one that the eco-stylus can help you with and does it very well. Here's my share of the message with the world:

After that message was done, I decided to put this through its paces and see if I could draw with it, and write with it. Now I am not the best artist in the world, and the first to admit this, so in the hands of a really talented person, this would do well. With me...it's just fun to share what I can do sometimes.
Now I know the name of the Stylus is not Bamboo, but since it's made of Bamboo, the name used in the video fits, and since Wacom was too high up on its horse to send one our way to look at this Eco Stylus gets the review, not the fancy one from Wacom which is as far from Bamboo as bamboo can be! See we're about truth in advertising. If you're naming it bamboo, it better be made out of wood! Wacom's is NOT. This one is. POINT to ECO STYLUS!!
Okay, so I guess you're waiting to see what we think of it, and whether or not it's going to get a stamp of approval or not. I'll just say you'll have to watch the video to see!!!
What I can tell you is that innovation is something we're always looking out for. We always want to see people take an idea, run with it, get support, and build something with it. Whether it's a product or a service, it's important to bring something to the party. Help advance Human-Kind in some way. It's why we're all here.
Ivo Beckers has done that. He's shown that with a little ingenuity, and some easily obtained materials he can create a product which helps those using tablets with capacitive surfaces an easy way to do more than drag your fingers across the glass. He's made it light, fun, and eco-friendly.

iSpeak...Italian

So this story is a bit of a heart grabber, but it's also a compliment to an app development company and a call to investors to reach out and corner these people and invest in them. In fact, it's a call out to Apple to invest in them to help them achieve some amazing things. I know there are some at Apple who read my postings, may this be one of them. These guys are doing some amazing stuff.
And now a little soul bearing. My mother has dementia. She's 100% Italian. She's reverted back to speaking her native language after over 50 years of English and Italian. Recently my father was hospitalized and I went to spend some time with my Mother to watch over her. I don't speak Italian so this is an interesting story. I was talking to her in English and wondering how I would explain to her that Dad was in the hospital.
I tried using Google's Translate program which is great, but it does not have a voice attached to it. I can type 110 wpm on the keyboard, but after reading my typing for a few minutes she got bored. Plus when driving you can't type so it's self-defeating. No thanks.
As we were walking a thought came up me of "I wonder if anyone has a translation app that can go from English to Italian?" It turns out there are a couple out there. Now I needed more than text to text, I needed the integration of a voice to allow it to connect with Mom since she's not much into reading.
And then I found it. FutureApps iSpeak Italian. Not only does it translate from English To Italian, it does the Reverse, AND it SPEAKS IT TOO!! So I could say something to my Mother in English and when she did not respond, I could type it in English, press a button to translate it to Italian, and then let the app SPEAK to her and she would GET what I was trying to tell her.

Literally every 5-10 minutes she would say to me "Where's Papa?" (in Italian). I would type to her "He's in the hospital" in English and click the translate button "lui é in ospedale" it would come up on the screen and then I'd click the SPEAK IT! Button and the voice of an italian sounding woman would come from the iPhone 4 and my Mom's face would light up.
I was also showing her a picture of my father laying in the bed injured in the hospital. Visual clues and vocal clues it turns out are helpful to people suffering from dementia. "We must go to him" she would say. We'd jump in the car and drive literally 5 minutes to the local hospital.
By the time we'd arrived at the hospital she'd ask "Why are we here? Where's Papa?". Because iSpeak Italian offers the ability to save what you've typed in, I could recall a statement and it would speak to her. She'd nod in understanding and we'd make our way to my Dad's room in the hospital where Mom could be with him. For 5 days we did this.
I was able to update her on his condition, let her know when we had to leave, and go eat, drink water, do other things that had to be done, all in her native language. Like walking around with a human translator in my back pocket! The cost? $1.99
Now, if you ask me what this was worth to me in this experience? PRICELESS. Life Saving. Stress Relieving.

So, here's where the call to investors and Apple comes in, and I know these guys have to be working on this.
This app will take text and turn it into translated text. It will take the translated text and speak it. What it will NOT do yet is to take the incoming responses from the person you are providing the translated text to, and intake that, translate it from Italian into English and speak it to you.
I really want that to happen. It may not happen in the time that my Mother remains on this Earth, but if there's something I could wish for, this would be it. I miss hearing her speaking English, and I was a damned fool to never learn to speak more than a few choice words in Italian. It now pains me to not be able to speak with my Mother. The compute power in the iPhone 4 and forthcoming products from Apple can accomplish this kind of speech synthesis. There just needs to be some funds I am sure to help in the development of that. That's what I would encourage investors looking for something viable to invest in...take a peek at the developers of these speech apps. They're working on tools that help mend boundaries instilled on us by life. It's a BIG deal.

Is Warcraft Conquest for Real?

There's yet one more World of Warcraft guide on the market this week. The guide, called Warcraft Conquest, supposedly goes way beyond the normal boundaries of a World of Warcraft leveling or gold guide. But what does that mean? Do we need another World of Warcraft leveling or gold guide? There are thousands of World of Warcraft guides on the Internet and none of them really cover everything in depth. There are some very good leveling guides and some fantastic gold guides, but no true “mastery” guides for the stuff that really helps players stand out in a game like this.
That's where Warcraft Conquest is supposed to come in. From the guru who developed Warcraft Formula, Warcraft Conquest is designed to cover all the important things that a high-level player in World of Warcraft wants to excel at. The guide’s author, Max Lee, has supposedly been playing this game since the early betas.
That means he’s been able to acquire hundreds of thousands of gold, master multiple classes in both factions, and dominate dozens of instances from the most basic early level instances in vanilla WoW up to the most complicated instances in Cataclysm. The guide itself is made up of dozens of videos, including everything from videos of Blackwing Descent, advanced PVP videos of arenas, battlegrounds like Alterac Valley and Twin Peaks, and world PVP zones like Wintergrasp.
So, the question is do you need another World of Warcraft guide? The answer to that depends largely on what you’re working towards in the game. If you're still trying to level up and reach level 85 for the first time or if your only goal is farming for gold you may want to look for another guide. Warcraft Conquest is much more than those other guides can offer. This guide was developed to help players at level 85 be the best they can be in PVP, raiding, gold making, and everything in between. There aren’t many other guides that can say that.

There are days...

There are days we all remember. August 22nd, 1978 was one of them for me. Not only was Dad sporting some pretty wild sideburns, but he had gotten dressed in his dress uniform to swear me in at my enlistment ceremony for joining the US NAVY.
The picture though is a tribute to my Mom. At the time and as you can see by the look on her face, Mom was proud. She was totally aware of everything that was happening in my life and what I was going to become when I took that oath. It was a great time for our family.
We'd been around the globe and back. We lived in Oregon. Dad had survived a heart attack, purchased and had a home built, and life was pretty good. The next year 52 Americans would be taken hostage, I would go overseas to the Persian Gulf with many others and life on the planet would change forever. That was the beginning of interesting times. But Mom and Dad...they'd continue on.
A few weeks ago I saw my Mother. She's 81 this year, has dementia and barely knows who I am. My Dad has gotten up there too and we're looking to help him as he experiences a new side of life as well.
As tomorrow is Mother's Day, I thought it would be good to look back and say "Thanks Mom for all the wonderful things you did and gave me in my life. Thank you for being a guiding light to show me to the rest of the world and thank you for being the one who was always there when I needed someone to listen. I love you with all my heart. Bless you this day and all those you choose to remain here for. When your time has come, I will bless you and wish you well on your journey. You deserve a rest after all that you've done in this lifetime. Happy Mothers Day."

Mail Designer from Equinux...

Now, on to the review...
Mail Designer for the Mac. Want great looking stationery for your email? Look no further. Not only do you get great looking templates that can be modified, but you can also easily create your own using guides which make it truly easy for you to achieve great results in a short amount of time.
The 28 page PDF manual that comes with the program includes links to videos which will show you step by step how to do things in the program.
If you're a Mac user who's been around the platform for a while, you'll be impressed with the level of intuitiveness in the application. You can truly "create the emails you've always wanted" with this app.

At the start you're presented with this screen where you can actually see the app in action to see how easy it is to use and to get you confident right away that you'll achieve some great results.
Once you're past this screen you're presented with the Design Ideas window. Here you can select some of the pre-designed templates to work from including a blank one which you can use as a basis of creating your own stationery. When you find one you like, click the button in the right corner that says "Edit a Copy", or simply double-click on the template to open a copy on your screen.

in this case I am picking one called "Sports" as you'll see below. It opens into an Untitled window and allows me to edit various areas of the page as you would in a high-end Page Layout program like Indesign or PageMaker for those of us from the "Old School".

Once the template is open, I can change things like color, text, pictures. As you can see below, I took the perfectly good layout and created my own custom version of this. I can then save it and simply add it to my email program, and have this go out to my list easily.

After I have finished customizing things, I simply save the stationery into the Design Chooser area, and then right click it to install it into Apple Mail. To install it, I simply select New Email from the menu as below...

I am then presented with this dialog box which I would select "Install" if I wanted to do that. In this case I did and you can see from the image I am including after this one that the stationery shows up in a Custom area.

and when I then select that Custom Stationery to be used in a new email, the window looks like this:

And the best part of this is, that if I want to change something in here now, I can still edit some things. As you'll see below I swapped a couple of pictures and some text:

Once all of your changes are made, simply click send to send the email off. What's fun is when it arrives, the resulting email looks AMAZING!!! AND, on a PC when it comes in, it does not show up with a bunch of attachments. It shows up as just the email message like you see below:

This is important as a lot of people don't like extra attachments in their emails and when they see a message show up with a bunch of them, they might be less likely to open the message. This way the message comes through clear and precise. Nice job Equinux!
The example I used above was in the case of sending off a newsletter or quick announcement to someone or a group of people in your contact list. You can also use the basic template and create your very own personalized stationery from scratch easily.
There are other stationery solutions on the market. Some depend on other servers to pass images out, others will use a plugin that may or may not work, and still others include all sorts of attachments that other email readers never seem to assemble correctly. This app appears to do everything in the right order to produce amazing results. I can't say enough good things about it in the short time we have here, so I'll leave it to you to form your own opinion. Those who know me will say "If he doesn't like something, he'll tell you. If he does like it, he'll tell the world!". It's time to tell the world I LIKE THIS PRODUCT!
My suggestion right now is stop reading and simply go to the website and purchase this product!!

Once you do, they'll get you the software, the great pdf manual (28 pages worth) and you'll be off and creating your first stationery in minutes.
I'd like to throw out a big DOCMURDOCK APPROVED stamp for this product as it's really quite fun to use, intuitive, and produces great results. Impressive to say the least, amazing is more like it.

Something really original...

So the call went out,
"When was the last time you wrote something truly original on your blog?"
How about now?
Something really original...what could that be... E=Mc2...nope that's not original and with all the down talk on Nuclear now, who knows what might happen to my blog. It might actually get famous. Never can tell.
I suppose I could just dash out a few simple thoughts before bedtime...is that original enough? Depends on what the thoughts or musings entail.
I could pitch some products here like www.businesscreditspot.com or www.socialtimesaver.com or tell people to go to:
www.docmurdock.com/time.htm and sign in to learn how to create time from thin air, but those would not be original. Been there done that.
I could ask if anyone went out and got me the Blu-ray Combo Pack with Digital copy of TRON LEGACY, but that might be considered self-serving in some way.
I could share that I got a really good deal at Starbucks today on a 1lb bag of coffee and a nice looking logo'd container to store it in. I suppose I could brag on that, and that the Starbucks that I purchased it from on Beach Blvd & Garfield Ave in Huntington Beach has much better service and customer interactions than the store over on Golden West & Yorktown in Huntington Beach.
and of course I could brag that today while others were toiling at a desk that we went to the beach for a walk with the dog, talked about business, and actually made money while that was going on as that's what folks who are in internet marketing do.
Or I could simply say words which come to me through that group known as The Many who simply say:
"Thanks for taking the time from your moment to read this and appreciate the depth at which it seeks to connect with you. Today I had the pleasure of a nice discussion with a representative of the Executive Offices of Amazon.com. I very much appreciate the time they took to call, to listen, and to provide valuable information and solutions to every concern that I'd voiced to them and on the web.
To that end as a courtesy I have pulled my postings from Posterous, facebook, my blog, and am working on twitter right now. It's not often I'll do such things and it was not at their request. It's out of respect for an organization that's constantly working to improve their customer experience and protection of customers. Sometimes you need to speak loudly to be noticed, but when you are noticed it's amazing how quickly and correctly the results are delivered.
Amazon has assured me that they're working to remedy some things which I addressed in my postings about them and that they appreciated my taking time to bring them to their attention.
I'd like to thank Jeff Bezos for reading his email and knowing he does so is a credit to him and his organization. Also thanks to the executive offices for your handling of this situation and addressing things promptly.

Yes, that according to their customer service area is the truth. Found out the hard way today when my account was hacked and over $500 in good purchased, and not for my 50th birthday which is today.

Read about it over at http://docmurdock.posterous.com it's stuff that EVERY PCI Compliance officer at VISA/MasterCard/Discover/American Express should read and CNN should publish and shut that place down. The public is being screwed and Bezos is laughing all the way to the bank. I'm not laughing.

My 50th was screwed up because some hack got past the gates and there was no way to stop him. Amazon...you should be ashamed.

Oh and please don't send the lawyers calling. This is one class action that will bite you in the backside so badly you'll be forced to close down.

Even the animals are humbling

This is video from youtube from the tsunami of one dog watching over another as it lays there injured. Heart breaking and warming at the same time. One can only hope these fur people were both rescued and will find good homes to care for them.

Am hopeful that those in a position of being able to give have contributed something to help. Every little bit does help all.

For the longest time I was seeking a new way to view everything and I mean everything on my computer. No matter how much one organizes things there's always something that slips away to never be found. Icons vanish, folders hide folders, etc.
And then along comes "RASKIN". A namesake to Jef Raskin, the one who started the Macintosh Project at Apple Computer long ago, Jef was a human-computer interface expert and this app shows a bit of him within it.
Always seeking to find or discover more within your machine, you can spend hours sometimes searching for various things without finding them. Viewing documents can involve launching an app and waiting for it to open, then viewing a document, and if you quit the app, then you have to do it all over again.
Wouldn't it be great to view the docs in a window...well you could use quicklook for, but what if you had 100 docs and wanted to look at them all at the same time? What then!
RASKIN!!

Raskin for Mac gives you a new way to look at everything on your computer at once.
Launch the app, and using your mouse navigate to where you wish to go, then hold a key down and ZOOM IN. Scroll to see your information, when you find that which you want to open...

Just a snap of part of the interface. Directions always close by to allow you to navigate without digging for a PDF or other document to read. Just scroll over and see what commands you need.
Want information about a specific item in your window? Simply zoom in on it and there it is. Size, type, extension, date created, date modified, name, etc.

Focus attention on an item by clicking on it. Its color will change to reflect focus. You can duplicate it, move it to a new location, change the color of the borders, etc., easily using either mouse or menu commands. Right clicking in the main window of an area allows you to sort that area by different criteria similar to folders. Bring focus to a folder area by double clicking in the name area of the folder item. The only reason am using folder here is it's something we all identify with. Getting used to viewing all of your documents which are normally buried in a folder, in a new way...will take a little getting used to.

It took me about 20 minutes to get into using this and now I can't get away from it. I've stopped using my search functions pretty much all together. I simply launch Raskin and say ok...where is that picture or music or doc I was searching for and BAM! I find it fast.
Granted there are some that will not find this app useful, but for those who are visual, this is a god-send to us who need to look at things to connect with them. Stop wondering what to search for by typing in a name of something, merely sort your areas by name and browse through them as if you would look for something on your desk.
Fast, effective, and definitely worth the price of purchase. In fact I would think they'd make this more expensive once they add some additional features into it. I can't wait till Apple creates a Kinect like interface to the Mac and this gets hooked to a projector!!! Imagine the sweeping motions running through areas to find docs, open them up, zoom into images, etc.
Only one thing got me when using this app. It's a bit of a grabber when it comes to memory. Not a bad thing, it's just one that eats a big chunk of it and holds it. On my 23" HD Display it grabbed just short of 1GB of RAM. That was a bit much, even when the app was hidden it still held that memory so nothing else could touch it. This was something that caught my eye, but the casual user might not even notice it.
Special thanks to the team who produced the app for answering questions and making the software available to me to use and review. Nice work folks.

What's in a move...

So...perhaps it's time to post something about the move and how we ended up where we did after being where we were for the past 4 years....breathe...yes that was a long sentence.
Sherman set the way back machine (rights reserved by the original inventor of that saying) to around 2006 where a discussion took place between me and Maria (my wife) about where we wanted to be living. We were in a town called Larkspur in the San Francisco North Bay region of California.
My response to the where would you like to be living prompted to me to say "Scottsdale!" as we'd visited there a few times and Maria had been there previously. We went around and around about why we should not live there and basically 24 hours later an opportunity opened up for us to move there, so we did.
Now Marty let's take the Delorean forward in time to now, and the climate has changed, things are going well in Scottsdale, but then a message is received and for those who know me you know where it came from that simply said "You're needed in California, move now, a wave of change is coming and you need to be there to lead the shift in the tide".
Take that any way you want to, but what was most interesting was the guidance surrounding where we were to be landing once we got here. We're out looking everywhere along the coast south of LA and Orange County, but guidance kept pulling us North when we came upon a community called Huntington Beach. After looking in places like Laguna Beach, Newport, San Diego, North County San Diego, always being pulled more north.
We came to Huntington and found a place. In the process of doing the application it was snatched up by someone else. Okay, not a problem there are many places in Huntington let's look in the same area and see what we can find. So we did and came upon an interesting home that for some reason we were drawn to in the advertisements, etc. So we applied to be considered for it.
In the midst of consideration I had my brother who is a realtor come out and take pictures as those in the original ad did not seem to do the property justice and that's when we found out why were were supposed to be in the home we are now.

Now to some it may not look like much, but if you're a believer, this appears to be our Lord in a moment of gazing towards heaven and asking for support. In the instant I saw this image I knew we needed to be here and now we are.
Manifestation now comes in many forms. Simply asking is a great way to get the ball rolling. Taking the task on of pushing aside the judgement of self and knowing you're deserving of something is another way to help things along. And so is the simple acceptance that because you chose to come here from source and be part of the playground that is Earth, to be a part of the separation and disconnect that is humanity, but also to be here to teach others the benefits of sharing, connection, and loving of many to help others see the truth within and appreciate the glory that we're all connected through...well that's another of many reasons to be present to that which is coming forth.
There's a tide of change coming. We're here to help share with many the guidance of how to achieve in life that which you desire by simple inspired actions. Not a ton of work or required steps. All is a choice and by simply being present to make those choices the work or perceived work is nearly completed. The hard part is the BEing present which is why we're here to guide you and show you the way.
We love you. We're sharing much with many and we'll speak through the ways we can to get the message out to many who are listening and waiting to receive.

The sun has set on another day, but it dawns once again and calls to you to step into the light which you are and help to heal and show many that much can be achieved in this time of joy and celebration known as life. It's much easier to be a part of the solution than it is to be part of the problem. After all it takes more muscles to frown that it does to smile. Think about that the next time you choose (and you do) to be unhappy.

Copilot Live from Alk.com and opinions...

So I posted a tweet today for my favorite navigation app on the iphone. I got some people asking me back privately how can I recommend a specific app and say "it's the only app to rate DocMurdock-Approved".

And now for the reasons why:
A. I'm DocMurdock. If I like something and give it my stamp of approval...well there you go. It's my stamp :)
B. I've tested and reviewed the app and did so against one of the more popular apps on the iPhone, the infamous AT&T Navigator app from AT&T. I've also taken a look at others such as GPS Drive which is cute, but I don't know that I'd trust it on a long distance trip. Would I use it to skedaddle around town? Maybe, but I'd trust Copilot to get me to my destination and if it got me to the wrong place I know that when I submit a map error that it will get fixed.
If you're shopping for the holidays and you're not sure what to get someone and they have an iPhone, at some point they'll need a way to get from point a to point b and ways to avoid weather, traffic and other issues, CopilotLive is the single app that we recommend because it just works. Someone approached me for one of these in the past 24 hours and I resisted because the guidance to me from beyond was not to do it. As the emails to me got more and more needy I resisted and finally the last email came that was a shocker: (Don't ask me the name of this person, they will remain nameless)
"I know Maria really well" it said. I had to sit back and take that in. You say you know my wife really well and you want me to watch a video, read a couple of paragraphs and then render an opinion that will cause people to buy your product or service and I have no idea who you are? But you want me to do that because you know my wife???
Oh no, that's not gonna fly with me. If you want and can handle an unbiased opinion of your product or service and then have it touted to many people, then let's see the product or service and you will get an unbiased review as well as full disclosure about anything else surrounding the product or service.
That's another reason I recommend CoPilotLive. They got the review, they stepped up showed their moxie and their product rates HIGHLY.
But don't toss out the "I know your wife" card and expect me to jump up and write a review of your product or service that would be seen on a less than equal footing. Not my style and not the way I roll.

Emails...to watch OUT for.

In our computer world of today there are many wonderful things out there that can be done with the machines we use.
We can go through our lives and accomplish much work, we can do our jobs, we can run our companies or we can sit back write code and make people's lives miserable.
In the case of the email shown below it's designed to make lives miserable. It's sent out to more than 40 people with a line that's pretty much a dead-giveaway that it's got a virus attached to whatever is on the other end of the link in it. How do I know? Because I've been a victim of one of these. It's no fun.
Here's how it happens. You get an email from a friend it looks perfectly normal, you're in a rush and you click the link, you get sent to a website, a bunch of stuff lands on your screen and at the same time on your computer and it infects the whole computer like a plague.
It goes into your addressbook, pulls all of your addresses and then composes an email to send out to all of those people and those that are too busy will proceed to do the same thing and bit by bit everyones addressbook is cleaned out, their friends are emailed and eventually the addresses end up on a server being sent out to other companies to use in their mailings or worse.

If you receive anything like this, check the address where it came from. If it ends in yahoo.com call the person who sent it to you and let them know. Otherwise post something on facebook or twitter or both to let others know as someone out there may know your friend and they may be a victim as well.

Yahoo Search Marketing...Are you kidding me? Fwd: Case #236947578

Is Yahoo really this STUPID? or is it just me reading emails from them and loving their incompetence.
I received this message from Yahoo Search Marketing who I cancelled an account with a few years ago after their editorial process hung up ads for more than a week and cost us over $25,000 in lost revenue and I swore I'd never open an account with them again. Never will. Have no need to have ads hung up that long thank you very much.
But in the past couple of weeks they've seen fit to open an account for me in their search marketing area based on an email as simple as the one after their reply?
Carol Bartz, PLEASE FIRE YOURSELF before I walk into your next board meeting and have it done for you.
Yahoo deserves better leadership, leadership that's much more in tune with what that company could and should be and it's not kissing up Microsoft's backside either.
If anything it should forge an alliance with Apple, but that's for me and Steve Jobs to work out when you're gone and your board gets its balls back.

So you may ask transition from where to where. Well it started out many years ago when I signed up with a company called powweb. They were offering hosting at a great price and eventually they were bought by another company and I should have seen the writing on the wall. EIG or Endurance is the company that purchased them and they have a couple of different hosting solutions offered out of Massachusetts. Nothing against MASS having lived in Boston during my early life, but...this company SUCKS.
First thing they did was outsource all of the support to overseas which means that the guy or gal in Banglapore does not necessarily feel the same thing you do when your site is down. The phone delays, the language barriers...an interesting thing happened on the way to searching for a hosting solution to move my sites from...FATCOW Hosting! They looked really good at first...turns out they are a sister company to Powweb and well I was told they were better, their support in Phoenix, just down the freeway...not bad.
For about a year...not bad. Then...BAM! problems. Downtime galore. No 99.9999999999% uptime. Sites down for days, email down for days, multiple times during the year and all put back onto the user as their problem with their provider. HELLO???? Is this the same Fatcow that was supposed to be better than Powweb? Did you drink their koolaid? Or what?
So I took a leap of faith and went to the one place I never thought I would. Hostgator. I'd had problems with them in the past, but they invested in infrastructure, in quality support people and in speed of resolutions for some problems which Fatcow had NO answers and only wanted to blame me.
What was the last straw? Wordpress installation issues at Fatcow. They proceed to blame users for problems they're having with wordpress even in the case of a vanilla install. Can't work with that folks. So I just picked up and moved 27 domains that were pointed to hosting sections at your company. Yes, 27 of them. I've relocated them to hostgator and they'll stay here as add-on domains looking better than they did before because now they are reachable! Now they are up and running. Now the email is flowing, and now their owner is much happier.
I would spend time telling people to avoid fatcow like the plague, but...I think they already get that point.

Oh YA! You BETCHA!!
Personally I can't wait. After all, am not down with Vizio's Blue Ray player checking out and not delivering a great performance of streaming netflix from the very same connection that my ipad works quite well from. That tells me that their networking is LOUSY in that player, but the iPad is AWESOME!
So Apple...take the covers off the good and let's see what's on the buffet today :)

Yes, it's that time again folks. Time for me to share with you a little bit of wisdom in advertising.

But you left two very important words out of your Ad; "SINGLE-SIDED"
See when someone like me wants to print postcards for a really great business we want a nice color image on the front and a little bit of black and white text on the back and then we proceed to tell everyone how awesome you are.
But when we get to the shopping cart and find out what's below, we call in and we sound as surprised as your agent does when they say "Oh! no, that's for the Single Sided cards, didn't the ad say that?"
The answer is...NOPE it sure didn't.
So now we take our money and our business back to VISTAPRINT because even though the do a ton of printing and not all of it is the best in the business, at least they have reliable ads and do their best to make the customer experience one that's memorable.
Below is the shopping cart and the order number and...well...am not happy with the price. After all, paying 4 times more than what you said I'd have to pay, before the shipping...well I'd rather give my money to Vistaprint, and I recommend anyone else reading this do the same.

For at least offering to help on Twitter that is. Hope this guy Jason did not lose his job after stepping up and asking what he could do to help with the iPhone situation.

I told him what he could do, but so far only hear the sound of crickets chirping in the form of a response.
Personally not surprised. I'll keep fielding the questions of those writing in claiming to be from newspapers and we'll see which one has the stones to print things. Someone out there will and will probably win a PutzPuller for it...Or was that Pulitzer...either way.

The Customer Service Difference between AT&T Small Business & Apple Computer is...

When you walk into an Apple Store and say you run a small business, they bend over backwards to get you out the door with a smile on your face.
AT&T on the other hand...Not the same story.
Thanks Apple Computer for helping me this morning. The new Magic Mouse is working fine. And the matter we discussed about the website has been detailed and sent up the line to the right person as I promised it would be. You folks in Scottsdale Quarter Apple Retail ROCK!
Now, with regards to AT&T...first the retail side of things. Let's take a walk back a couple of years to the first iPhone shall we.
Had a few problems with it, did not get serviced by AT&T, was told to take it to the Apple Store and they'd help me out. At the Biltmore in Phoenix...walked in, explained the issue, in less than 5 minutes had a brand new iPhone in my hand ready to go. Biltmore Apple Store...you ROCK!
Come forward to a year ago, my wife decides she wants an iPhone. We try to sign her up on my retail account with AT&T. Oh you can't do that because she has a 415 number and you have a 480 number, the only way you can do that is to get one of our really awesome small business accounts!
So we did. And the ride down in the pits began.
1st off...NO APP for Small Business Customers to use to pay bills and such on the iPhone. HELLO!!!! What the FCK were you people thinking???? AS a retail customer I simply download the app, use my website login, pick a card, any card, and pay my bill, add service, add a line, blah, blah, blah. As a business customer I have to go to a computer, or an iPad (let's hope it's not on AT&T's DATA PLAN) and then try and get into the business website (not always available, the retail site is and was during the iPhone 4 launch more than the biz site).
2nd is that wonderful business website. PREMIER they call it. Premiely CRAP is what I call it. Not impressed. Whoever designed it...take them out and break their fingers and never let them near a keyboard again. Or better yet, let them sit and watch while some 16yr old does a better job cranking one out in wordpress. That will solve their problem.
3rd. The iPhone 4...LAUNCH DAY. Stood in line with many others and was disappointed. AT&T did not order enough inventory to cover what the traffic flow into the stores was. Now, they're retracting their positions that if you bought a 16gb phone on launch day that they'll order and call you when your 32gb phone is in and will not charge you full price for the phone and then do refunds. I only paid for a 16gb phone based on that promise of "customer satisfaction".
I go to the store today and have to talk to some joker who tells me "Well, I've worked on computers for 20 years...and we can't do this because it's against federal banking laws". PLEASE. Do not jerk me off, I am married! I've been doing this longer than he has and I have more of a story to tell, but it's not relevant to the situation. The other thing is that Merchant Processing is part of my business and credits are done ALL THE TIME. Sheesh. Felt like I was talking to Mickey Mouse about Minnie having an affair with GOOFY. Yeah, NOT RELEVANT.
You can't do it because someone in your freaking store does not know how to use an override key and provide what is called Customer Service. It's not your fault that AT&T management does not know how to properly stock stores, or provide great web access to business customers, but when someone stands in line with 60 other people and then gets told one lie after another, it's enough to make us puke.
I downgraded from a 32gb 3GS to get an iPhone 4 because you did not have inventory. I was told that you'd get inventory in and hold a phone for me. I was told that I would have to pay a restock fee of 10% (who freaking cares about the 19.00), and I was told I'd have to pay an additional $100 for the 32gb phone. That's $119.00, it's NOT $299.00!! So...you order the phone, and charge me $119.00, and when it comes in, I give you my current 16gb phone back in erased, and cleaned up fashion with all of the original materials. You credit me for that, and you can then resell the phone as used once it's been reset, and make some additional cash.
IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. It's called CUSTOMER SERVICE. Because this particular customer can and will have a flow of over 10,000 people per hour coming to his website to read about this if he really decides to promote it and at some level some other people will read and forward it, and eventually your CEO will be on TV explaining to the world why you decided to yank the chain of the one person on the planet that does know how to get attention.
No, I am not angry with Apple. I LOVE AND CHERISH MY iPHONE, BUT I NEED that 32GB phone. I am NOT angry with AT&T. I am disappointed that their "Customer Service" model does NOT extend to the "Small Business" end of their client spectrum and frankly I think it's sad that their CEO has his head jammed so far into the sand as to not know about such things or is simply choosing to ignore them in hopes that people will leave and go to Verizon when the time comes.
Personally I can say that I HAD no plans of going to Verizon, but the more and more things that happen with regards to the PREMIER SMALL BUSINESS EXPERIENCE with AT&T, I can't see any reason not to give AT&T the flying fickle finger of fate and walk over to Verizon and sign up even in advance of the iPhone arriving.
There, for the moment I am done. I have two newspaper interviews to do now with regards to this situation. I know they won't print what I've written, but they and the TV people who I am talking to about consumer issues will do something about getting this resolved to my satisfaction.
Look iPad people, NO LAWSUITS REQUIRED! Just a posterous account, some links to facebook, twitter, and a few other places and a few thousand followers some of who write for various magazines, papers, etc.

So all the fuss about Android 2.1 is???

I mean come on people! Let's get real! So I did. I got real. I went down to my local AT&T store to try out a phone on the same network as the iPhone 4 which of course has all these problems to see what I was really missing about Android.
Okay, so the screen is BIGGER on the Samsung...what was that phone model number, give me a minute, the Samsung Captivate...which has a 1ghz processor, 16gb of storage, a larger screen than the iPhone4, and it runs ANDROID Mike!!!! OH MY, get out my boots.

And then there's the iPhone 4. Let's look at that one shall we Johnny!
Here we are Mike, the iPhone 4 from Apple. First exposed by that group of incompetent losers at Gizmodo is some of the worst photographed images in the history of planet earth, sports a 1GHZ processor, 16gb of storage and it runs iOS 4.0.1 from Apple Computer!!!!

So what was the test I chose to do? Simple. Google Earth! Both phones have a GPS in them, of course launching the app should not take that long, and I am sure that the Android phone will just sweep the iPhone under the rug.
Well...I was....

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!
Not only did the UI in the Android version of Google Earth really SUCK badly, the GPS in the phone could even find the location of the store. So in the time it took Android to launch the app while on the wireless network in the store, I used 3G in the DEATHGRIP on the iPhone, launched Google Earth, and using the UI simply clicked the "Find my Location button circle in the lower left of the screen and the Earth spun, zoomed in and the little blue dot on the screen appeared so bright on the screen that people looked out the windows up in the sky and said "Say Man! what's the big blue dot doing above the store!"
And I replied that's the iPhone 4 KICKING some ANDROID ASS all over Scottsdale! Needless to say the laughter filled the store, a few high 5's all around and another couple of iPhones got sold.
And me, I paid my bill and returned home laughing all the way.
Oh wait!! The construction of the Android phone...Samsung take a lesson from Apple and hire some real designers to engineer your next phone. Apple has you beat by a mile. A larger screen does not beat the Retina Display, and your performance on Wireless using a microcell with 5 bars does not outdo the iPhone 4 on 3G with 4 & a 1/2 bars in the deathgrip of the one and only DOCMURDOCK.

Where's my website?

That's the trouble, most people build a website but have no idea where it's listed...
So you went out and had that wonderful new shiny website or blog built, you were promised instant customers, but none have shown up. You've gone to google and tried to find it, but it's not listed...the designer said all you needed to do was get the site up and people would magically show up.
NEWSFLASH - YOU WERE MISLED!
And believe it or not this happens more than once per day. Actually it's a number we're not even going to print here because the number of times per day that this happens is staggering, and if you could turn that number into dollars...Tiger Woods would be showing up to party with you.
There's certain steps that you need to take when placing a website onto the internet to get it noticed, to get those magical people to show up and pay attention. They are:
a. get the site built
b. get the right code added into the site to make it attractive to search engines.
c. have a plan to promote the site and your business
d. execute that plan to your target market (and no, your market is NOT everyone).
e. adjust the code in the site
f. promote the site
g. reexamine the site
h. adjust the code in the site
i. promote the site
j. is any of this sounding like a process?
You see, letter J is key in this. It IS a process. It MUST be repeated. It can NEVER be a one time thing.
It's called Search Engine Optimization and it's as relevant now in the internet as it ever was and it's not just about adding code to the site or blog, it encompasses so much more than that, and it requires that you reexamine and refine the things that you do over and over again.
Even after you find the right recipe of elements to be used in combination with one another to achieve that desired PAGE 1 exposure for your website or blog, there's always more to do to supplement the exposure.
See SEO includes interacting in social media channels. Nobody tells you that or classifies it in the same regard. It includes being present to discuss in groups, to post things potentially daily in various places.
But SEO as it's called is a foundational element of true website exposure. If you're not doing it, or having it done, you're missing out.
"I don't have the time for this!" I hear that a lot. Actually you'd be surprised at how much time you really do have for this and how easily it is to automate a lot of it so that you spend less and less time and gain more and more exposure into your market.
"How's that possible?" Well, when you interact with people who have been doing this long enough, you find that there are tools that they use that you can use to do things that took them weeks or even months a few years ago. Now they can take you a couple of hours or even minutes. Technology is a wonderful thing that allows you to have an advantage over those who came before you.
You can do more in a day on a computer NOW, then 10 people could do in a month 10 years ago.

Your Ecommerce needs...

When the maker of a piece of website creating software sends out an email to clients and it shows up like this, it indicates to me a hole in their ecommerce plan. One that can easily be solved by using a site that allows you to sent out a newsletter with images from a secure location, speedily that fill in the blanks so your emails don't look like a jigsaw puzzle and don't get deleted.
What system do I recommend you use to avoid this type of issue?

It's always fun when someone asks what a shopping cart is. The temptation from time to time is to say "you know those things down at the store that you jump in and get pushed around by your parents..." but that was a long time ago.

In today's marketplace known as the internet a shopping cart is basically an add on to the user experience of visiting your website. This add on allows you to take in payment for goods and services and in some cases also interact with your visitors through emails, opt-in's and more.

Why does one need a shopping cart?

As I mention it's an add on to the user experience. It allows you to communicate with your visitors by adding autoresponder (emailers) to various things the user clicks. It allows you to send them a broadcast message or newsletter after they've signed up. It allows you to receive payment for goods and services, and more.

How do they work?

The 'cart' is basically a website that runs a program constantly. When someone clicks on something on your website to purchase, the program activates and the person is transferred to that website seamlessly, they're asked for payment information, informed of privacy, asked about shipping information (physical products only) and then sent to a thank you page or a download page once all is completed.

So tonight...with the iPhone 4 out of its case...

We went walking... into the Scottsdale Fashion Plaza and I was so irked that when we actually
got into the mall...I HAD A SIGNAL ON MY iPHONE 4!!!! I am going to SUE CONSUMER REPORTS FOR LYING AND TELLING ME I'D HAVE no signal if I had my hand around my phone. THEY were SO WRONG! HOW COULD THEY LIE!!!

and we then passed a cool store so I had to take a shot of that, see below

So you know these are shot with NO FLASH at all, just light in the mall and from the stores. That camera takes
some nice looking pictures.
But the thing that got me was that after reading the Consumer Reports article and all the other things on the web
that told me how bad my iPhone 4 was and that I was going to lose bars and not be able to get any kind of a signal while
holding the phone like this:

Yes the above picture was taken the other day, but I was holding the phone the exact same way this evening and had the same exact display except instead of wireless showing, it was 3G all the way.
So to all those people running those tests...Get a LIFE. Get out of your basement, Take a shower, and get outside where the signals are and use your phones. They're great looking pieces of gear that are fun to use. Take the cases off of them. I did and was able to surf, text, and call with it. I was amazed! This thing actually makes a great phone call. Who'd have thought that a phone was meant to be used for calls.
With all the articles going around about simply holding them and watching bars drop, I thought that Apple had invented a new way of watching grass grow.
Now, for the real class action suit...SUE MICROSOFT for making Windows Vista, and for all those easy to break through back doors that keep virus companies like McAFEE in business. That's who you should be suing.
Apple merely made a great looking phone that is so bad at getting a signal that no stores can keep them in stock. They just magically fly into the hands of consumers daily and vanish into thin air.
Yes, this email is DRIPPING with sarcasm. It's pointed at those that would slight Apple Computer. See Apple is a company I've loved for a long time and believe in. I don't bleed 6 colors, but I do believe in what the Apple stands for. It's never let me down and I am confident that it will resolve whatever perceived issues are out there.

My New iPad - A user's guide by Wallace Wang - A review

And what better way to provide a review for an iPad book than on an iPad, so that's exactly what I am doing. After all, those who know me, know how much I love the iPad. This review is written using the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard as well as the charging dock with the iPad in portrait position to make the editing easier (in my book) :)
When I received this book, it took me a few minutes to open it as I was thinking if I were someone who had purchased this book, would it be before or after I got my iPad. So I pondered a bit, picked up the iPad and tooled around with it a bit, then set it down and picked up the book.
I immediately found myself caught up in...does it cover this, does it cover that, did he mention this and by the time I put it down I realized "WOW, there were things in there that I'd not only not seen, but found to be very useful." The surprising thing is that I've had my iPad since the day they came out. Mine was delivered that very first morning in April by UPS along with a "Congrats!" from the driver. I asked him why and his response was simply "Dude, we've got hundreds of these out on trucks this morning and yours is the first one on my route to be delivered!"
So the book is very thorough. It covers the iPad very well, and in detail that not even the online documentation does as that's never fun to read. This is as you can flip through it and with the ipad near you, you can move through the book and see things, as well as touch, swipe, pinch, and prod (my word) the content of your iPad so that it suits you. Something else I love about this book is the printing using a "lay flat binding" which is a nice job by the printers.
Once you're all setup and working, the book makes a great reference guide to go back to and refer when you're looking for that one thing that you thought you knew how to do, but could not find in the iPad itself.
Am going to rate this book a 9 out of 10 as there was one thing that I thought was missing and that was in showing screen images I think it's important to clarify to a user that in landscape mode you'll see a certain representation, while in portrait mode you'll see a different view. That's really the only thing I can see to improve on in here. I would not worry about doing anything in this in color as one has the ipad in color so it's not like having the book be that would add anything to it. In fact it would probably take awawy.
I love that the author covers not only the iPad, but also those tools that the user will need to use to get the best experience out of the iPad. This to me makes this book an invaluable resource. It will be fun to see it evolve in the next edition when iOS4 becomes available for the iPad as well as to see the errata website be updated with new and exciting information as the iPad moves from infancy to maturity in our world.
A pleasure to read. If you have an iPad you'll be well served to get this. If you're thinking about getting an iPad then this book is a great intro to the platform you're about to welcome into your life and will show you why the iPad is very far from being "just a larger iPhone".

Why would I choose things that don't serve me and the greater good? the question came through in a blur…so that you get to sample the perspective of both and see which one fits into your existence.

You see, it's your playground. I'm merely dropping you off here to play and go and see and do and become one with all so that you can gain more knowledge more wisdom than simply sitting on that cloud as you do wondering about what could be, or what is.

iPhone 4 and bars...

So I ventured to AT&T to see the iPhone4 today. Had to touch one. Looking forward to having one this next week. Yes, something tells me that baby is arriving here to my hot little hands :)
Now there's all this talk and video footage of bars being lost on the phone. Notice the upper left corner of the phone...all bars in place. My hand wrapped around the phone covering the antenna exactly where it's not supposed to be according to all those shooting video and for 10 minutes I kept it just like that. Those bars did not budge a centimeter. Nothing. No lost bars, no discoloration on the screen, nothing but WOW sharp text, great speed opening apps, and clear as a whistle video shooting when using the camera. Impressed? OH YEAH! You will be too when you focus on having one and bring it into your life. Get out there, touch one, feel it (it actually feels really nice in the hand), and it did not get warm either during that time period.
Not sure what all the hoopla is about, but when done with my test on that phone I took out my 3GS and did the same test. It went from 5 bars to 1 bar and would still make a call, but once I took my hand away from the phone for a moment the bars came back. The iPhone4...5 bars all the time. (for me.) Oh and that is one very sharp screen. No more squinting while you're driving to see stuff. It's razor sharp and your eyes tune in on that quickly.

iOS4 add apps to folder within iTunes

I was wondering about this today and was thinking if I was an app and needed to get into a folder how would I go about doing it in iTunes.
Well, here's the answer. It's easy!
First off while in iTunes, simply click the app tab when you have your iphone plugged in (this should work for the iPod as well). You'll see your list of apps show up and you can choose which ones you want to synch by simply checking the box next to them and then pressing apply and allowing the apps to synch. Now, what I did in this window was create a folder by dragging a web page shortcut for googlevoice and the settings icon on top of each other and created a folder. I left the default name of utilities.

Next what I want to do is add AIR SHARING to that same folder, but without having to drag it from Screen 2 into the folder which is this case is in Screen 1 with the calendar, nike and a couple of other apps. Well, I don't have to drag anything! In the screen below you'll see I highlighted AIR SHARING so you can see it.

All I need to do now is to click the box next to Air Sharing placing an X in there, and you'll see in the next image that my goal has been achieved. The icon for Air Sharing has ended up inside of the folder with the other two icons. Now if you check off multiple items the same thing will happen, only with more than one icon. When you click apply or synch depending on the option given you, the apps will then be installed into the right location on your iphone, or ipod and when iOS4 becomes available for it...the iPAD as well.

iOS4 update day

Okay folks as one of the first ones in the world to get this downloaded and online, let me share some experiences:
a. I never saw this screen as around 30 seconds after the update went live I was downloading and installing it.

One thing that's key is to make sure you have the latest version of itunes installed as called out in this picture under STEP 1
DOWNLOAD ITUNES!

Next up, I did experience a couple of gotcha's that I want to share:
1. if you're using a bluetooth device, open up Settings >General > Bluetooth and REMOVE the device, then reconnect it. I went to answer a call after using the phone for a bit and my bluetooth shut off as I picked up the call, and it locked my screen. I had to hold the sleep/wake button and the home button until the phone restarted. Other than that...NO PROBLEMS!
2. Depending on how much memory you have in your phone 16gb or 32gb you may experience some slowness when you have a lot of apps open. This is not a problem, this is the phone telling you that its doing a lot. This is what people asked for with respect to multitasking. You wanted to be able to switch between apps and do other things. You'll be able to, it's gonna catch on real quick and soon you'll be checking mail, texting, facebooking, twittering, getting directions, buying something while listening to your favorite song play in the background.
BREATHE :) It's FUN and still zippy.

And then there were 2 pages of apps...I used to have 12 pages of apps, but I found the folders and now there are just two pages of apps...or at least icons now that I know you can drag one icon onto another one and it will create a folder allowing you to drop other icons in there and little by little you'll have a clean phone which you can then add more apps to if you wish. here's the screen shot of the phone now.

Am sure there's more to share, but right now have some client projects to finish.

Yes, I saw this video:

An interesting example for the Seattle PD to show at their meetings of how not to handle a situation. The "officer" in this, actually looked like a trainee was outnumbered by the people milling around shooting things with their cellphones, his gun could have been taken and he could easily have been killed by any one of them.
Where was his backup?
Why was this gal being 'detained'?
Why was he not properly trained in subduing a subject? Obviously he was toying with her as he should have had a handcuff on her at some point and then he'd not have to deal with the other person who got involved.
The gal in pink who got into this...bad move on her part. She was interfering with a Police officer in the performance of their duty.
Was he right to hit her? No, not based on that video. However, he thought it appears that she was trying to separate him and his subject of interest and that's why he lashed out. Adrenaline does that.
No excuse for this at all though. In this world of today a lot more can be accomplished by simply communicating. Police in this country are always supercharged to do something where simple words can sometimes remedy an issue.
In the end, call for backup/support and wait until they arrive. There's no excuse for what he did, no matter what he should have simply detained and awaited for support.
Bad move in my opinion. And yes the one gal was resisting arrest and doing a good job of it. (sadly for the policeman).

AT&T Where's the iPhone4???

COME ON PEOPLE GET REAL!
Apple gives you exclusive access to the best looking piece of hardware on the planet and you put a BLACKBERRY on your site? HELLO MCFLY!!!! The iPhone4 is no where to be found in the business site.
If I was Steve Jobs I'd be ringing some necks over there. I mean let's get real. Maybe Apple should move things to Verizon or some other network. Hell the business customers can't even pre order the phone when they get someone on the phone - "Oh no Mr. Murdock you have to pre-order through the website"
GIVE ME A BREAK! Not SERVICE for your business customers. This is called BEND OVER WE'LL DRIVE.
Apple should NOT be impressed.
Definitely not DocMurdock Approved. And locking business customers out of purchasing through the retail site...OUCH.

AT&T & Business "Service"

As a business customer, am sad to say I got more respect as a Retail Client from AT&T. That's a pretty sad reflection on AT&T.
Business customers are the last to hear about new product announcements, the last to have access to preorder things like the iPhone4
and are made to wait an inordinate amount of time on the phone to get service.
Here's the AT&T business site right now in the midst of the pre-ordering of the iPhone4.

So who is responsible for not allocating enough computing resources to handle the load of incoming requests? Or did you simply forget to put the thing up in time for people to order?
Pretty sad showing AT&T, especially to us Small Businesses that you so desire to court and keep happy.
How about:
a. NOT OUTSOURCING SUPPORT TO INDIA anymore for your USA business customers. Allow them to take care of those outside the borders.
b. Prepare and test your websites so that you can activate them on time
c. Give your Small Business Customers some credit or something to make up for our not being able to preorder the best technology around because we can't order it through the retail site and we can't order it through the Apple site because everything is locked down to your site for the "best service portal for our business customers". If this is your "best" you have a LOT to worry about.

Things that steam my broccoli

Okay so that's one way of saying 'peeve me', and since we do have some young readers from time to time, trying to be a bit more sensitive.
When I read this story below on TUAW, I got irked. If you follow my stream on twitter you'll understand that when I believe something or someone is wrong or being wronged I will speak up and say something. Have never been one to hold my opinion and never will change that.

The NYTIMES is wrong in asking for this. Violates our terms...if you put out a publicly available RSS feed and someone offers the ability for that feed to be read in their reader and you don't like it...PULL YOUR FEED.
There are a ton of feeds that can be added in Pulse. This app was written by some guys at Stanford and they did a really great job at doing it. No reason to have this app pulled from the App Store.
I've voiced my opinion to Apple as well. I think the app will be put back in the store shortly.
What really surprises me is that the Times reviewed this app in their paper! These guys are a bunch of hypocrites and they probably felt that they should have been featured in Steve's keynote. Well they were, but their site would not load due to WIFI issues at the hall. Of course those idiots don't watch the video feeds to see these things.
The NYTIMES is not a paper I care to read. It's overly priced, should have been digital only long ago and needs some writers that are less than opinionated sharing the news. It almost reminds me of a pack of Helen Thomas's loose in a pressroom.
If you put a feed out on the net and make it available, I can read it. I can provide access to it in my app. If that violates your terms then you need to cease & desist everyone on the planet, not just one app. There are many in the App Store that read your feeds. The one thing about Pulse is they do it without any additional crap getting in the way.
I say to the TIMES, GET A LIFE. CNN IS KICKING YOUR BUTT with news and well MSNBC is kicking theirs. Give us some good news and invest some money in these guys to rewrite your NYTIMES app and make it for the iPad. That'd be the right thing to do along with a written public apology for being a**holes.

Smiling Steve, well that's a good sign. That would change a little later due to some networking issues. Not sure
who provides the wifi service in that hall, but am sure he's put their backside through a ringer for it not being
able to support all the connections that they had there.

Okay, so the iPad is a chick-magnet :) Too funny. I can personally attest that this thing does draw a crowd. Whenever I have mine with me at Starbucks there's at least 1-2 demos I end up giving. I always keep my iphone nearby as people want to see
it in comparison. Fun to share and then to see that "I HAVE TO HAVE ONE" look on the faces.

Other "platforms" say that they're the best to develop for, but time and time again Apple shows that the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch/Macintosh are the platforms to be developing for. When someone makes more in day from sales then they do from 5 years of advertising...that says something. Congrats Theo! Great App by the way.

HTML5 is where the future of the web is. It's NOT in Adobe's outdated FLASH. Sorry kids, but it's true. I use flash as sparingly as possible due to the crash factor. Oh did you see the new virus/security exploit out there for flash just yesterday? That was timely.

This one surprised me. Ebay does a TON of business. Great numbers and for a free app that simply provides a gateway...it rocks! I use it with my ipad and love the countdown timer that it gives you to watch an auction and bid on things. So far
I've won two auctions where normally I'd have lost them due to timing issues. Thanks EBAY!!

Netflix...I love it on the iPad. Now, here's a tip if you're not a user of these guys yet. Sign up at their website for the 30 day free trial and then install the app and sign in through the app. This way you're not limited to the 2 week trial that the App gives you. I think this will be the same with the iPhone as it is with the iPad app.

Sure don't hear about Microsoft or Google paying out a BILLION in Revenue to their developers. That's AMAZING!!!

The iPhone is OWNING the mobile browser market with Safari. Android is over there with 22.7%, but the iPhone market share is NOT decreasing. In fact with the launch of iPhone4, I think it will almost double before the end of the year.

The slide shows the metal (stainless steel) frame of the new iphone4 which is part of the antenna structure. This means that since the antenna wraps around the phone you're bound to get a signal somewhere on this thing. Should improve reception dramatically. And you can see a number of protocols supported there as well.

This is a sample of the clarity of the new display. Left image is the iPhone 3GS running iOS4 and the right is the new iPhone4 running iOS4. Notice the sharpness of the text? yeah, that baby is gonna look amazing in the hands of owners.

Now for those at GIZMODO, here's the breakdown of the parts so that you now know. That's a very large battery. Can't wait to tax that puppy talking on some long client calls.

Oh yes, what's a phone with 2 cameras good for? Making really high quality video calls over wi-fi. Cell networks can't handle this yet, but over the next little bit Apple will educate them on how to push this through their pipelines to make it work. Bravo Jony and the team for a great product production.

Seeing your baby video via phone...amazing way to connect. WOW.

Apple is more than just a computer company. Apple does truly care about people and making lives easier. Having worked for Steve, this is something he's been living for a long time. We worked together at PIXAR from 1991 - 1997. It was truly an amazing time and I am proud of that time I shared with him. Amazing guy to work with and for.

Okay Developers get that software and get some apps developed for this new platform. Make our custoemrs proud.
It amazes me after all that he's been through, Steve shows up and is all in on these demos. He cares about the perception of the customer of the product that Apple delivers. It's not about name calling or slashing people or doing any of the other things that some other companies do in their demos...okay no names mentioned but they know who they are.
He's just showed a product that nobody on the market has, or can even come close to. 64 handsets running that other software...but on a lousy display by comparison, oh and when iOS4 runs it runs faster! OUCH. Great demo, can't wait until download time on the 21st. Once again Apple will deliver and we'll be back talking about it then.

How I got my iPad

You know it's a funny thing when people see me with the ipad. For some reason everyone that does says "I am so jealous" :) it's a theme that's been repeating itself over and over again since I received this so allow me to share a little about this wonderful tool that has arrived in my life.
See I was lucky enough to have one come to me. I did not go out and buy it. When I say lucky that's the human term for it. In spirituality I'd say that I asked the universe to deliver one to me and it responded very kindly to my request. I am highly grateful for that response.
So how did this happen? One day I was looking over something about the iPad in a magazine and said out loud "I am going to have an iPad". Over my shoulder I hear a voice saying "You can't afford one" and I turn and there's my wonderful wife who generally says this every time I desire something of a technical nature. She did this with the iPhone when it first came out and one of those showed up as well. Different story, just as grateful.
With her it's almost a game because she knows that when she says that I will manifest what I desire. So I said back to her "I did not say I would buy one, I simply said I am going to have one". So I set that intention out there, asked the universe to bring one into my life, took a deep breath, and in my thinking declared that I was worthy of receiving this, and that when it arrived without question I would be very grateful for it coming into my life, and as a result of that arrival I would share the story with many and inspire them to look deeper into their lives at things they spend so much time saying they can't or don't have, instead of starting the process of achieving them through asking.
And then I put it out of my mind.
Just before the iPad became available to the general public, I was on twitter looking through my tweet stream when along came a tweet from a company called idrive.com which offered a chance to win an iPad if you came to their site and signed up for a free account for their online backup service and then shared a tweet with your followers. The key was in the reading of their language - Sign up for the account first, then follow them on twitter and then then send the tweet out to your followers. Aha!!! Something to take action on I said, so what the heck, I had nothing to lose and I did want an ipad in my life so I took a chance.
I signed up for the account, tweeted the message, said to the universe Thank You for the opportunity that has shown up in front of my eyes, I have taken action on it. And once again I put it out of my mind.
About 24 or so hours later something told me to go and check my direct messages on twitter.
So I did. To my surprise there were 3 from this company called idrive.com
The gist of the messages was: "Michael, we want to advise you that after we verify your identity and shipping information you will be declared the winner of one of our iPads".
At first there was a voice in my head saying "SAY THANK YOU!!!" and there was another one saying "Is this legit?". That was the human side of things checking in because if you're like me when you see things on twitter sometimes there's so many fake things you just never know. So I looked the company info up and called them, left a voice mail and I received a call back shortly after that saying "Dude check your computer, you installed our backup software and have an account with us, it's legit CONGRATS!"
A bit later I received an order verification that the order for the iPad had been placed and eventually I received a tracking email from Apple with the UPS information on it and on April 3rd in the morning UPS showed up with a box, handed it to me saying Congratulations! I asked why they were saying that and the driver told me that I was his first ipad delivery. They had tons of them they were delivering that day and I was number 1. What a hoot that was!
Most will go out and purchase these themselves or will receive them as gifts and a chosen few will get them from winning them in a contest. I am happy and grateful that mine came to me as it did. It's a great demonstration of law of attraction at work:
a. Ask for what you desire
b. know you're worthy of receiving it
c. be open to receiving it without question
d. if there's an action to take to help it toward you, take that action
e. When you receive it (not if), say THANK YOU
f. Always love you deeply. This helps the universe know that you know you're worthy
So if you have the chance to enter a legit contest for something you want, do so, follow the steps above, and there's a chance that whatever you desire will wind its way to you.
It's when we ask and then we question whether or not we're worthy, that these things fly away from us. Act like you've already received it, feel the feeling of having it, hold that thought, that feeling, that vibration as it's called and play with the universe. It's waiting to play with you and to share much with you.

Gentlemen,
Adobe is a different company than when you were in the drivers seats. It's fundamentally taken a step off into the deep end of providing shoddy products.
You should come back and rescue it from the current crop of losers running it. That's part of the reason that FLASH is what it is. Detrimental to productivity in a broader sense of the word.
The apps such as Photoshop, Illustrator and the vast libraries of type that Adobe produced early on...those were and are great.
FLASH is a tool and not one that enhances uptime. When you can open the very same page on both a Mac and PC with the same version of flash running in 4 different browsers and have it crash (and have that page be adobe.com) there's a problem with the tool.
Additionally as you know there are security, malware, virus concerns with that plugin that other options are removing from the table.
So nice to know that Adobe loves Apple, but the Adobe of your time and the Adobe of now...like your photo in the letter are a horse of a different color.
Yours won. This one is losing.
And of course there's the problem that Adobe even with its own tools cannot produce a version of FLASH running stable on the iPhone platform. It's had 3 years to do so and has not done it yet.
So why should Apple or any of its users get behind your Adobe Hearts Anyone.
Apple does not own the web. They never claimed to. That was Microsoft. Apple does provide a superior user experience and one that's NOT supported by FLASH.
Can you fix that? Can you influence the Board at Adobe Systems to fire the current CEO and install one who believes in progress and moving to the future with stable tools and products for enhanced productivity? If so, my suggestion would be that you do so.

And this is posted without the use of FLASH from a perfectly functional iPad.
To the CEO of Adobe Systems:
You're entitled to respond to this publicly if you desire. I am happy to discuss this letter because what I am about to say is very simple.
Adobe Systems has had ample time to break into the iPhone and create a version of flash running on this phone for a substantial amount of time. What's funny is that if they have, nobody seems to have seen it. No one there has stepped up and taken the initiative to make this happen.
You have the tools, you have the staff, and if the iphone was so important to you, you would have surely stepped up and done this some time ago just to prove to Steve Jobs that you could do it. So as Wendy's said in the old days "WHERE'S THE BEEF"?
I am personally surprised that you stand there and say there's nothing wrong with FLASH. Do you ever visit the tech support team to see the number of calls that come in over flash being tested on the same web pages using different browsers on the same computer systems and all of them experiencing flash crashing those same web pages, both on MACs and PCs. It's not just APPLE Computers having these problems. Gateway, EMachines, etc.
So how can you sit in San Jose and claim that Apple is the bad guy here while wanting to keep their phones and ipads up and running without the use of Flash? Why don't you create a lite version of it so that it does not suck batteries dry and does not render the phone useless and then show that to Steve Jobs and the rest of Apple?
Or are you in the position of not being able to admit that this cannot be done? I'd be willing to say that's why you've not done this. Of course you can prove me wrong...or can you?
Apple and Adobe have had a long history together. I've been lucky enough to be a part of that history on some levels. From Sales of Adobe & Apple products, to support of them, to beta testing them, and to supporting the Crew that made Toy Story while I worked as Steve's Macintosh Systems Engineer credited in that very same movie as such.
I've used FLASH since its inception/creation and now because of the instability and the number of crashes I've experienced with it running under Snow Leopard (some 400 of them since SL launched). I've crashed it with Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Camino and even an old version of Netscape running on my Mac Mini. I've crashed it running on a Gateway MT3416 laptop in IE6, and IE8 as well as Chrome, Firefox and even OPERA on the PC. You have a problem with your plugin and you need to fix it. If you're sitting there saying you don't, then your dealer sold you some bad crack and you need to get your money back.
The real challenge in this letter is this: Successfully produce a version of flash running on a jailbroken iPhone and/or iPAD for demo purposes. Show it running and displaying Adobe.com (one of the sites that crashed my browsers ironically) and show it to the world if you can within 3 weeks. If you can't then step down from your position because you don't belong there. Adobe has teams that can implement this from the ground up and they should be able to do so quickly.
Your stance in this is completely counter productive. Steve Jobs merely threw the gauntlet down and said FIX this. Your reply of "We'll develop for everyone else other than the iPhone is a step in the wrong direction. The most popular phone on the planet is the iPhone. To do otherwise is not in the best interest of Adobe and your board should replace you.
